Your introduction to Yoga

Aim of the course:

This course will provide you with the foundation yoga knowledge and experience you need, to take the first steps on your yogic journey. After this course, you will have gained enough insight and practise to join any other yoga class with greater confidence and skill.

What is Yoga?

Yoga, an ancient Sanskrit word meaning "to join", is a classical Indian science focusing on the union of physical, mental and emotional development.

Most people know that yoga practice makes the body strong and flexible but through regular practise it also brings emotional stability and clarity of mind. Yoga is more than just physical movements and postures - it is a philosophy of unifying ourselves through thought, mindfulness and discipline.

What are the main benefits of yoga?

  • general feeling of well being
  • increased self awareness - mentally and physically
  • correct posture - strengthening of muscles and bones - increased flexibility
  • improved breathing
  • increased energy
  • calming of the nerves - reduction of anxiety and restlessness
  • relaxing the body and calming the mind

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

No prior experience of yoga is required.

This course is suitable for any adult who wishes to begin exploring yoga as a health, exercise and whole-person practice. It is also suitable for anyone who has already been practising yoga (maybe you have attended general group classes but never completed a formal Introduction to Yoga), those wanting to review the physical and Vedic foundations of yoga, or simply as a yoga development course, to refine and improve current practice.

Yoga itself is suitable for everyone - regardless of age, health and ability - we can all benefit from the practise of yoga!

COURSE DAYS & TIMES

This practical introduction to yoga course is held over 3 consecutive lessons, to optimise integration of your new knowledge and practice. We find this the most time-efficient way for people to learn the basics of yoga, before joining a general class. Completion of this course is desirable, however not essential, for joining general yoga classes. A session or two of yoga Self-practice at home between the weekends is encouraged (optional not essential!), to enhance learning and discipline of mind and body.

About Jackie McCaul

Jackie McCaul is a qualified Iyengar Yoga teacher. Since discovering Iyengar yoga 15 years ago, regular practice has led to a greater understanding of the many benefits yoga can bring into daily life and as a teacher Jackie enjoys encouraging other people to experience this. Jackie's classes are disciplined yet fun. She is a good communicator, a lively teacher and encourages participants to push themselves but also enjoy themselves. Iyengar yoga is particularly good for anyone who is stiff, has any weaknesses or injuries and Jackie firmly believes that classes should be accessible to everyone, so individual requirements will always be accounted for within each class.

Jackie has been extremely fortunate to be taught directly by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar at Estes Park, Colorado USA in 2005 and she regularly attends workshops taught by senior teachers. Iyengar teachers go through rigorous training (a minimum of two years) to become qualified and continued development is essential. Jackie has been qualified to teach since 2003 and continues professional development each year.

Jackie McCaul teaches weekly classes at The Happiness Centre of Iyengar Yoga, along with Pregnancy Yoga and Yoga for Teens.
