Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

The ancient healing art of reflexology is an ancient healing art first practiced by the early Indian, Chinese and Egyptian peoples.

Reflexology was introduced to the West by Dr. William Fitzgerald in 1913. Fitzgerald was an American surgeon who noticed that pressure on specific parts of the body could effect a related area. By dividing the body into ten equal and vertical zones, he concluded that pressure on one part of a ‘zone’ could affect everything else within that ‘zone’. His work was further developed in the 1930s by Eunice Ingham who refined the therapy into what is commonly known today as foot reflexology. This works on the basis that congestion in one part of the foot mirrors congestion in the corresponding part of the body, and that by treating the areas of the foot, you actually relax and heal the whole body.

What happens in a reflexology session?

A reflexologist uses hands to apply gentle pressure to the feet, detecting and working on areas where there are deposits and imbalances to release blocks in the body allowing energy to flow more freely. The therapist will take a case history to ensure that they fully understand the client’s needs and although each client and each session is unique, sessions usually last one hour. A course of treatment varies in length depending on your body's needs and your practitioner will discuss this with you on your first visit.

As the therapist works, there may be temporary discomfort which is an indication of imbalance in a particular part of the foot and body, however the treatment is usually very pleasant and relaxing, with a general sense of wellbeing and relaxation.

Benefits:

Reflexology treats the whole body and can aid the body in restoring balance and healing itself. As a result of stress, injury or illness, energy pathways can become blocked and by releasing these blockages and restoring harmony Reflexology encourages healing. The therapy can assist bin a wide range of acute and chronic conditions as well as helping to maintain health, balance and to promote relaxation. Reflexology is totally safe and natural and therefore suitable for all ages!
